Camenisch Paul (1893 – 1970)
He was born in Zurich and graduated in architecture at the ETH of the city. In the twenties, he began painting watercolors with evocative architectural landscapes. In the same period, Camenisch moved in Ticino and joined the group Rot-Blau, together with other young Swiss artists: he adhered to expressionism, inspired by shapes and colors of the works by Kirchner. Very active in the field of promotion and development of the arts, after the death of Müller and Scherer, he founded the group Rot-Blau II with Hans Stocker, Otto Staiger and others; few years later, he founded in Basel an anti-fascists’ group named Gruppe 33 and attended by the artists of the city. In 1937, the work of Camenisch was desecrated during the exhibition “Entartete Kunst” (Degenerate Art) held in Monaco of Bavaria and organized by the Nazis. Today he is considered one of the most important Swiss artists of the twentieth century and many gallery owners and collectors contend his artworks.
