Description

Leopold Haefliger (1929–1989)

Born in Lucerne he owed his passion for art to his father. He completed art studies and travelled to Italy, France and Spain. His subjects were inspired by social issues and artists like Soutine, Vlaminck, Modigliani and Ensor. Back in Lucerne, he abandoned his sporadic attempts at abstraction in behalf of figuration, depicting the classic motifs of painting: portraits, still lives and landscapes. Outside these canonical genres, he deepened the unusual carnival theme, represented in dark and deforming tones.

In Häfliger paintings, a melancholic atmosphere have an upper hand: dark colors transferred on canvas with dense brushstrokes, inspire ambivalent feelings in the viewer.
