Description

Arnaldo Pomodoro (1926 –)

Born in Romagna, before being a sculptor he studied stage design and he worked as an assistant in the restoration of public buildings. He then developed a deep passion for sculpture, using various materials; before gold and silver, then iron, wood, cement and eventually bronze, that led him to success. During the late 1950’s he traveled a lot around the USA and Europe, and he got in touch with many contemporary artists, such as Alberto Giacometti, Louise Nevelson, David Smith.

During 1961-2 he joined the movement named Continuità, and he elaborated his personal style, grounded on the contrast between the geometric external smoothness and the complexity of internal mechanism. During this decade he moved from small sculptures to big-sized ones, that allow a deeper reflection about the internal sides of the objects. Today he is best known for his multiple versions of his sculpture Sphere within sphere, realized in bronze. He also teached art, both in Italy and in the USA.

During his long-standing career he created lots of public big outdoors artworks, that often took place in famous squares all over the world (in Copenhagen, Brisbane, Los Angeles) and in symbolic public places, such as in the court of Vatican Museums and in front of United Nations building in New York. He exhibited internationally, in Italy, Australia, America, Japan.

He currently lives in Milan.
