Augusto Giacometti (1877-1947)
Swiss painter born in Borgonovo di Stampa in the canton of Grisons, he is a cousin of Giovanni Giacometti. After studying in Stampa, Zurich and Chur from 1894 to 1897 he lived in Zurich, where he studied at the School of Applied Arts, embarking on a career as a drawing teacher. In 1897 he moved to Paris, where he enrolled at the National School of Decorative Arts. He then moved to Florence, where he was inspired by the painters of the Renaissance, with particular reference to Beato Angelico. He got to know Ardengo Soffici, Giuseppe Prezzolini and Giovanni Papini, and from 1917 he approached Dadaism. After several trips to Germany, Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands, he also travelled to Great Britain, where he met William Turner.
He died of a heart attack in Zurich in 1947.
