Art and hotels: a strong blend

There are hotels, traditional or more recent, which have focused on the involvement of the guests starting from art: these structures offer unique contemplative experiences that have as protagonists paintings, sculptures, installations, and sometimes the architecture and interior design of rooms and common areas.

From the United States to Europe, the marriage between art and hotel offers peaks of excellence particularly in Italy: among the most important accommodation in Milan, we can mention Villa San Carlo Borromeo in Senatobia, and the magnificent Grand Hotel de Milan where Verdi spent a long time. St. Regis Grand Hotel, Cavalieri Waldorf Astoria and Hotel de Russie deserve a special attention, since they stand out for their modern and contemporary art collections. In Verona stands the Byblos Art Hotel is famous for its contemporary art, whereas in Florence the Four Seasons Hotel for its sixteenth-century’s bas-reliefs and the Renaissance heritage. Switzerland Also Switzerland is a the protagonist, since many cities and cantons offer lodging solutions for lovers of art and design: in Zurich for example, the Dolder Grand from 2008 has a new architectural look thanks to Norman Foster; on the border between Italy and the Grisons, Bregaglia Hotel organizes art exhibitions and in the Engadine, the Castell provides a guide to better understand the hotel’s contemporary works.

In Center Europe, it is possible to find other superb examples of charming hotels that exhibit major works: the Propeller Island City Lodge in Berlin is a triumph of eccentricity due to the design dream of the 30 rooms; the Artotel Ermelerhaus Berlin exhibits masterpieces of contemporary masters such as Andy Warhol and Georg Baselitz, while the decor is signed by Philip Stark. Landscapes of Provence and Mediterranean climates characterize the Colombe d’Or in St Paul de Vence, the summer residence of the great artists of the twentieth century, and the Semiramis in Athens, where you can admire an amazing private collection of contemporary art.

Overseas, the Gramercy Park Hotel, with its selection of works by Warhol, Basquiat, Haring and Picasso, leads a group of fine hotels scattered around North America: the 21c Museum Hotel in Louisville, the Joule in Dallas, the James in Chicago and the Chambers Hotel in Minneapolis, all characterized by a great commitment to offer a one of a kind hospitality. In the coming weeks we will discover one by one these and other art hotels.
