Description
Dupré Jules (1811 – 1889)
Born in 1811 in Nantes, Jules Dupré spent his childhood in L’Isle-Adam near Paris, where his artistic talent was born, nurtured by his father’s Chinese porcelain factory.
After moving to Paris, Dupré studied briefly with a landscape painter. Highly selective in his choice of motifs, he is less so in relation to the immediate and fleeting appearance of the landscape, preferring to give more importance to character and emotional appeal. He frequented the countryside around Limoges, before settling in Paris in 1829. Here he frequented the Louvre, becoming involved with Claude Lorrain and the Dutch landscape painters.
From 1850 Dupré settled in L’Isle-Adam. He died on 6 October 1889.
